Exercise 1:  1D flow in a confined aquifer.

Groundwater is flowing from well no. 1 to well no. 2. It is assumed that the flow is 1-dimentional. In the region between well no.1 and well no.2 four different soil types are present – each with different hydraulic conductivity, K1, K2, K3, K4.

The hydraulic conductivities are estimated to

Ka=      0.01 m/s

Kb=      0.005 m/s

Kc=      0.1 m/s

Kd=      0.002 m/s

Question 1:         Calculate the effective horizontal conductivity between well no.1 and well no.2 in figure.

Question 2:         Calculate the flow between well no.1 and well no.2 in a 1m strip. The groundwater heads in well no.1 and no.2 are h=14 m and h=12 m, respectively. Specify the result in m3/s.

Question 3:         Calculate and draw the head as a function of x.

Question 4:         Calculate the flow in box 2 and 3
